KINGSTON, Jamaica — Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) spokesman on finance, Dr Peter Phillips says he “will be engaging comrades across the length and breadth of Jamaica” as the party embarks on a mission to re-energising and improve the life of every Jamaican.

This declaration comes in the wake of opposition spokesman on National Security, Peter Bunting, throwing his support behind Phillips as leader of the party when Portia Simpson Miller steps down next year.

Phillips, in a news release today, said he has taken note “of a public statement issued by Comrade Peter Bunting indicating his withdrawal from contesting for the post of president of the PNP.”

Phillips said that he has since spoken to Bunting, and “thanked him for his support, which will have a significant positive impact on the continued unity of our party.”  

“I have also taken note his willingness to continue working on behalf of the movement, and I have no doubt that he has a valuable contribution to make.

“I also take this opportunity to acknowledge, and express, my heart-felt thanks for the overwhelming positive support which has already been expressed by members and supporters of the PNP at every level, including: the delegates, group members, parliamentary group, councillors, constituency and divisional caretakers, national executive committee, executive committee members, PNPYO, the patriots, women’s movement, National Workers Union and overseas affiliates,” said Phillips.
