ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC) – Grenada police said they were investigating reports that a politician had brandished a gun during a commotion with an activist of the main opposition New National Party (NNP) as campaigning continues for the February 19 general election.

The police in the rural town of Grenville said they had already taken statements from the activist, Paul John and two other people regarding the incident that occurred over the last weekend.

The police said that it is against the law for anyone with a firearm license to expose, display or brandish the weapon in public without a proper explanation.

Soon after Prime Minister Tillman Thomas announced the date for the general election, the police issued a statement urging all political parties to ensure that their supporters acted in a responsible manner and not engage in activities that would result in breaking the law.

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), which won the 2008 general election by an 11-4 margin, is seeking to get another five year term in office. It is being opposed by the main opposition NNP, headed by former Prime Minister, Dr Keith Mitchell.
