Portia asks Integrity Commission to investigate PNP campaign funding issues
KINGSTON, Jamaica — President of the People’s National Party, Portia Simpson Miller, at a meeting of the Officer Corps of the party today, requested that the Integrity Commission of the party investigate the issues raised by the treasurer in his report to the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of July 23 and 24, 2016.
That report was not accepted by the NEC, a news release from the PNP said Wednesday.
PNP Treasurer Norman Horne’s report alleges that some of the party’s candidates in the last general election collected money from donors but have not accounted for the funds.
The campaign funding scandal has triggered a fresh round of conflict within the ranks of the fractious political Opposition.
Today, the party said the Terms of Reference for the investigation will be completed by Monday, September 5, 2016.
The Integrity Commission will be asked to provide a preliminary report to the Officer Corps of the Party by October 3, 2016, the release continued.
The Integrity Commission was established in 2010 and is chaired by Bishop Wellesley Blair and includes Daisy Coke, Burchell Whiteman, Cedric McCulloch, and Fred Hamaty.
The party said the Commission will be free to draft additional expertise as required to complete its investigation.
Up to yesterday, Simpson Miller said she was unaware of the campaign funding scandal in which her People’s National Party has been mired for more than a week.
