RGD urges re-registration of people born before parents were married
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Registrar General Department (RGD) is seeking to re-register children who were born out of wedlock, but whose parents have since married, in a bid to have their birth certificates reflect the new status.
The updated birth certificate would reflect that the child was born in wedlock and the registration process would allow for the father’s particulars and the mother’s marital status to be placed on the child’s birth record, the RGD said.
In order to re-register, both parents must complete a form then submit it to the nearest RGD office with a certified copy of the children’s birth certificates and the parents’ marriage certificate.
Forms can be downloaded from the RGD’s website or any of its offices islandwide.
The department cautioned that a Justice of the Peace (JP) will be required to attest to the parents’ signature on the specified documents.
