Red-hot Jamaica Scorpions top at Christmas break
ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) — Jamaica Scorpions’ crushing innings victory over Leeward Islands Hurricanes inside three days last weekend has left them on top of the standings in the Regional Four-Day Championship at the Christmas break.
Playing at Warner Park in the fifth round last week, Scorpions produced a clinical all-round performance to vanquish the hosts by an innings and 73 runs and leap to 67.6 points.
However, they are narrowly ahead of two-time reigning champions, Guyana Jaguars, who lie second on 64.6, following their 10-wicket win over Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in Georgetown on Monday.
Scorpions’ victory was their third in five games and was perhaps their most dominant. They amassed 550 for seven declared batting second, with Brandon King (194) and Devon Thomas (114 not out) scoring hundreds.
Leg-spinner Damion Jacobs then claimed a 10-wicket match haul as Hurricanes were dismissed for less than 250 in each innings.
Scorpions started the tournament poorly, losing to Jaguars at the Guyana National Stadium by 181 runs but have since won three of their last four games.
Barbados Pride, meanwhile, are third in the standings on 47.2 points after their rain-hit, drawn encounter against Windward Islands Volcanoes who are fourth on 41.6.
Hurricanes, who have lost two straight, are fifth on 39.4 points while Red Force, who have lost three of their last four, are rock bottom on 35.6.
The Professional Cricket League season will break for the Yuletide holidays and then the Regional Super50 starting in January, before resuming with the sixth round of the first-class championship in March.
