Rochester man sentenced in lottery scam case
NEW YORK, United States — A 64-year-old man in Rochester, New York was on Friday sentenced for his role in the illicit Jamaican lottery scam.
Roydel Nicholson was convicted of mail fraud following a jury trial.
He reportedly defrauded three individuals out more than US$145,000.
The victims include a 94-year-old man from California, a 74-year-old man also from California and a 77-year-old woman from Detroit.
The complaint states that the victims were led to believe that they had won various prizes such as US$1,000,000 via telephone conversations.
They were told that in order to receive their prizes, the victims had to pay taxes, transportation fees and other various fees.
It is estimated that American victims have been sending $300 million a year to Jamaica as a result of the lottery scam.
