St Thomas bus operators resume work after protest
ST THOMAS, Jamaica — The Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) this afternoon announced that operators on the route between Morant Bay and Kingston returned to work this morning following a protest yesterday.
The operators say they withdrew their services in a bid to get the Ministry of Transport to address problems they are facing regarding robot taxis, the issuing of badges, and poor road conditions.
A release from JATOO said that the St Thomas operators agreed to return to work this morning following a substantive meeting between Joseph Shoucair, Chairman of the Transport Authority, and JATOO, which represents the operators.
JATOO members, along with operators, say they will await the decision of the Transport Authority by Friday of this week.
The JATOO chairman, Louis Barton, also promised to engage operators at an agreed venue in St Thomas within two weeks.
Meanwhile, the group commended Shoucair for his “unprecedented engagement” with the operators, adding that they intend to encourage the chairman to facilitate similar engagements across the island.
