Tribute marks Boston Marathon bombing
BOSTON (AP) — A tribute is underway in Boston for those killed and injured in the bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon a year ago.
Vice President Joe Biden, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and former Mayor Tom Menino are among those scheduled to speak at the invitation-only event at the Hynes Convention Centre. Several survivors also will share their thoughts.
There will be a march to the nearby finish line and a moment of silence at 2:49 pm to mark the moment the two bombs exploded.
In Washington, President Barack Obama planned to observe the anniversary with a private moment of silence at the White House.
Boston police Commissioner Williams Evans says the anniversary is an emotional day and brings back “some terrible memories.”
Fundraisers, panel discussions and smaller ceremonies at hospitals and elsewhere will follow, before this year’s marathon is run on April 21 under heightened security.
