KINGSTON, Jamaica — A watchman who pleaded guilty to breaking into a house and stealing several items was at a loss for words when he was told that he could serve five years in prison.

Marlon Grant, 19, pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, larceny and receiving stolen goods when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday.

Allegations are that between August 21 and August 22, Grant reportedly used a duplicate key to gain entry to the house of the complainant.

Grant was reportedly held by residents with the items and the key to the dwelling house in his possession.

He was handed over to the police and was subsequently charged.

When he appeared in court, Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey asked Grant if there was any reason he should not go to prison.

Grant, who was mute after pleading guilty, did not reply.

“You can go to prison for four to five years,” Pusey uttered.

A wide-eyed Grant then told the court that he was speechless.

“You think a Michael Jackson,” Pusey said.

An October 1, sentence date was subsequently set and a fingerprint order made.

“Stay with me, by that time you will get sensible,” she said.
