THE Jamaica Boxing Board of Control will host the Annual Executive Committee meeting of the American Boxing Confederation (AMBC) at the Iberostar Rose Hall Beach Hotel in Montego Bay, from tomorrow through to Sunday.

The AMBC is the Continental Commission of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) that regulates amateur boxing in the Americas. The Americas grouping is drawn from territories in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean, and 16 delegates will be attending the meeting.

The delegates who were elected to four-year terms last year are from the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Costa Rica, Dominica, Ecuador, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the USA and Venezuela. There will also be two delegates from Canada, who will be making a presentation on behalf of the Organising Committee of the proposed Women’s Elite Continental Boxing Championships.

Domingo Solano, the president of the AMBC, said that the reason that Jamaica was selected as the venue for this year’s meeting was to show the high esteem in which the Jamaica Boxing Board is held in the Americas boxing fraternity. Leroy Brown, the general secretary of the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control is one of the two Caribbean representatives on the executive committee. The other is John Charles from Dominica.

High on the meeting’s agenda is the planning of activities in the Americas for 2012, and approval of amendments to the AMBC constitution which are to be put in place immediately after the meeting. The calendar of events taking place in the region this year will also be finalised, after which there will be a selection of the venues. The outstanding boxers (male and female) in the region will also be selected.
