Observer fun day fiesta for Sav today
WANT to see Savanna-la-Mar’s best football and netball players vie for Observer trophies as other readers try to come up with the best dance and best DJ lyrics to the Observer jingle?
Then come to the Llandilo Cultural Centre today for the inaugural staging of the Observer fun day fiesta, which is being staged in association with the Westmoreland Football Association.
The fun begins at 9:30 am and should last well into the evening. Other events scheduled throughout the day include:
* a special football match between the Observer invitational team and the Savanna-la-Mar business invitational team,
* musical entertainment by Mega Force with Ron Muschette from Irie FM acting as MC, and
* a children’s package that will include a bounce-about, the orbit, the old-fashioned swing and much more.
A mere $50 will not only get you in, it will also include a complimentary copy of the Jamaica Observer.
According to senior field officer for the paper’s Western Bureau, Conroy Walker, the fun day is the newspaper’s attempt to forge greater ties with the community of Savanna-la-Mar.
“The bottom line is to get a bit closer to the people and give back to the community,” he explained.
The entire community is expected to be involved in the fun day and the Football Association will get the proceeds from the sale of food and beverages.
“The whole idea of the fun day is a total bringing together of the business sector, the man in the street and the FA so they can have a closer relationship with each other and with the paper,” Walker said.
The business community will have an opportunity to display banners across the cultural centre, as a way to promote their businesses.
Today, the first-place football team will take away a $10,000 cash prize and the second-place team will receive $5,000. The top goal- scorer and top goalkeeper will each receive $1,000.
For the netball competition, the winning team will leave with $5,000 in cash, the second prize is $2,500 and there will be sectional prizes awarded for top goal shooter and most valuable player.
The fun day will move to other western towns throughout the year and will culminate with the grand finals in the football and netball competitions.
