HE DHL Import-Express 2002 Basketball Classics tipped off yesterday at the National Stadium Courts with an opening ceremony and one women’s league game.

The other game between Tivoli All Stars and Montego Bay Cricket Club was not played because the former are contesting the division one semifinals.

Twelve of the 20 men’s teams were on parade, while five of the six female contenders were represented at the ceremony.

Braves’ Roger Marshall and Treisha Knight took the mixed shoot-out contest, while Link-up All Stars’ Rodney James captured the slam-dunk competition.

Spencer’s Tailoring also presented a cheque to Patsy Thomas and Elaine Barker, which will be used to provide the national junior team’s outfit, whenever they travel.

Jamaica Basketball Association’s president, Marlon Nattie said: “This is the first time one company is sponsoring a male and female basketball competition in Jamaica.

“It is also the first time so many rural teams are in a Corporate Area competition. This competition will provide a lot of exposure for the rural teams,” he said.

In the night’s lone game, Lady Panthers defeated Braves Smiler 51-46. Cassandra Ellis top-scored with 15 points and five steals for the winners, while Naomi Brissett scored 25 points and pulled eight rebounds and nine steals for Braves.
