Dads celebrated at JCF Cadet Academy pre-Father’s Day event
KINGSTON, Jamaica— A sharp salute, though symbolic in nature, captured a moment of pride, unfiltered gratitude, genuine sincerity, and profound respect for the fathers, uncles, mentors, and male figures who showed up for the young JCF Cadets at their pre-Father’s Day celebration, recently held at the academy.
To honour, appreciate, and celebrate was the mandate of the young men at the academy as they stood before the men who represented the kind of individuals they hoped to become. Heartfelt expressions and moments of complete vulnerability defined the occasion as the fathers and father figures witnessed their sons openly express, firsthand, the meaningful impact they have had on their lives.
More than 70 men turned out to stand in support of their young male charges, who are enrolled at the JCF Cadet Academy. Every single cadet was represented. Those who did not have a biological father present were accompanied by an uncle, brother, cousin, teacher, or another positive male figure. Every cadet was accounted for. The men surrounded the young cadets with their presence, offering reassurance and demonstrating that they are supported by men they can rely on to help guide them into responsible adulthood. The picture-perfect moment spoke volumes.
“My hope is that they become successful, responsible, and happy men who make positive contributions to society. I want them to pursue their dreams while remaining grounded in their values,” shared Corporal Rome Miller, who is assigned to the St Catherine North Policing Division and has two sons, Dante Miller and Tamari McKay, enrolled at the academy.
Having their father present at the Father’s Day celebration quickly became one of the most meaningful and memorable moments for Miller’s sons. Dante commented, “Playing games while celebrating our father made the moment even more enjoyable.”
A highlight of the event was a friendly father-and-son domino competition. The catered event saw fathers and sons teaming up with the shared goal of emerging victorious in an exciting and spirited tournament. The activity not only encouraged friendly competition but also strengthened the bond between the participants.
The fathers also appreciated another thoughtful gesture, as each father or father figure was presented with a gift basket by his son. The presentation was a tangible expression of the young men’s genuine appreciation for the men who are consistently present and actively involved in their lives— the men who attend Parent-Teacher Association meetings, offer guidance, and provide consistent support.
Detective Inspector Rohan Knight, the guest speaker, urged the fathers to continue setting positive examples.
“Fathers, I’m encouraging you to continue being prime examples to your children and even to other children who sometimes need mentors.”
He also emphasised the importance of maintaining effective communication with their sons and encouraged the men to seek help whenever they encountered situations they deem difficult to handle.
Deputy Superintendent Tanecia Johnson, Principal of the JCF Cadet Academy, beamed with pride as the event exceeded her expectations.
“The reason for having this event is because we wanted to create a safe space where our young men could truly recognise and celebrate the men who have consistently shown up for them without question and without fail.”
DSP Johnson added that it was equally important to host the event to underscore the value and importance of positive male role models in society and to reinforce the critical role fathers and father figures play in shaping the next generation of men.
