Negril businessman gunned down
SHEFFIELD, Westmoreland — Well-known businessman and owner of Elvis Bike Rental in Negril, 41 year-old Elvis Whyte, was gunned down and his licensed firearm stolen Monday night in an attack that has left some residents calling on the police to do more to protect them.
Robbery has been eliminated as the motive, as Whyte’s attacker(s), who pumped a bullet into the back of his head and one to each side of his chest, did not take the J$76,000 and US$90 he carried at the time of his death. His Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol, which bears serial number VB8499, was apparently the only thing stolen.
Police say that Whyte, who lives in Rock Hill, was attacked as he left the home of Ingrid Williams, the mother of his two year-old son.
“Him come here about 8 o’clock and at about 11:00 pm him say him a go home. Me always stand up at the door and wait until him start the engine but me never do it last night,” she recounted tearfully.
Williams said that after Whyte exited the house and she closed the door, she heard a shot and began to scream. Two more gunshots forced her into action, she said, but when she ran outside the attacker(s) had already fled the scene.
Williams said she jumped into her car and drove down the road in search of her boyfriend’s killer(s) but the search was futile.
In reaction to Whyte’s murder, residents of Sheffield, who contend that criminal elements are taking over the community, have called on the police to protect them.
“We want (head of the Crime Management Unit Senior Superintendent Reneto) Adams or somebody as good as him to intervene. Me nuh want me pickney fi grow up so, for me never grow up so,” said one resident.
