Downtown businesses protest upsurge in violence
Businesses on East Queen Street, between Gold and Hanover, closed their doors yesterday to protest against a spate of recent shootings linked to a turf war between gangs in that section of downtown Kingston.
According to police reports, at about 7:00 pm on Saturday gunmen opened fire in the vicinity of 58 Gold Street, leaving one dead and four injured.
But Superintendent Carlton Wilson of the Kingston Central Police Station maintained yesterday that although the area remains tense, it has stabilized since the shooting. And he objected to the small scale shutdown, arguing that it may spread fear.
