Clarendon cops get help from the community
MAY PEN, Clarendon — The Clarendon police division last week received three motorbikes from the Police Civic Committee, and one bicycle from Young’s Sports Ltd in the parish. The items are worth about $1 million.
The handing-over ceremony was held on November 21, at the May Pen police station.
In his address, Assistant Commissioner of Police Lynval Bailey commended members of the committee for their commitment to assisting the police.
“These motorbikes are useful for crime-fighting, patrolling, reducing traffic congestion and anything that is conducive to maintaining law and order in an urban centre,” he said.
The assistant commissioner also thanked Young’s Sports Ltd for the bicycle.
Terence Bent, the superintendent of police in charge of Clarendon, also commended the Police Civic Committee for its interest in the welfare of the lawmen.
“All Jamaica will see how concerned this dedicated group of Jamaicans are about ridding this country of lawlessness, crime and the fear of crime,” he said.
William Shagoury, chairman of the Police Civic Committee, pointed out that the donation had been made in an effort to help the cops deal with emergencies as quickly as possible, particularly when the town is congested with traffic and regular police cars are unable to move quickly.
Shagoury said the committee would maintain the bikes. They were purchased by donations from about 15 business persons and organisations in the town of May Pen including:
* the Jamaica Livestock Association, Maxie Department Store, Rapid Sheffield Company Ltd;
* SuperPlus Food Stores, Larry’s Cambio, Brenda Goodhall;
* Polymills Company, JB’s Wholesale, Victoria Mutual Building Society,
* Jamaica National Building Society, Zipp Cafeteria, Trevor Dunkley and Company,
* Sha-gore Aggregate Ltd, Shagoury’s Hardware Ltd, as well as Motor Bike Sales and Service.
The bicycle was donated by Garth Young of Young’s Sports Ltd and will also be maintained by the company.
