Lecture on enforcement of intellectual property rights today
THE role of the police in the enforcement of intellectual property rights will be discussed in the fourth in a series of lectures today at the Urban Development Corporation building in downtown Kingston.
The lecture will address copyright and trade mark infringement issues and guidelines on how to identify pirated and counterfeit goods.
The lecture series are part of a wider public education programme to promote respect for and a better understanding of intellectual property rights, according to the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO).
Presenters will include Natalie Wilmot, attorney-at-law and manager of copyright and related rights at JIPO, who will speak on “Copyright Protection, Redressing Copyright Infringement and Offences”.
Attorney-at-law Stacy Mitchell will speak on software policy, while Aldith Hylton, an attorney-at-law and manager of Trade Marks and Industrial Designs at JIPO, will outline the various trade marks offences and the challenges posed by the presence of counterfeit goods in the market place.
The presentations, JIPO said, should be of particular interest to members of the Organised Crime Investigation Bureau, an arm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, which has responsibility for policing intellectual property rights offences.
