Pregnant teen on shooting rap gets bail
SASHA Payne, the pregnant Denham Town teenager charged with the shooting of a boy, was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 in the Gun Court Thursday. She was booked to return to court on December 5.
Justice Mahaved Dukharan offered Payne bail after the court was informed that the wounded boy, 11, and his mother were reluctant to give statements to the police.
Payne, who is represented by attorney Michael Lorne, is to report to the Trench Town Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm and was ordered not to be seen in public between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am.
Dukharan had previously denied bail to the 17-year-old mother of two because of the seriousness of the allegations.
Payne is charged with illegal possession of firearm and shooting with intent.
The child was shot in the foot after Payne and another man – who is now deceased – allegedly engaged others in a gun battle in Arnett Gardens, Kingston earlier this year.
The petite Payne, whom police described as “dangerous”, following her arrest last month, wiped tears from her eyes outside the courthouse, while speaking to her attorney about the “high” sum of her bail. She was told that the amount was reasonable.
