PNP skilled at neglect, says Golding
LEADER of the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Bruce Golding has charged that the ruling People’s National Party (PNP) had become so skilled at neglecting the country’s infrastructure that it was commonplace even in constituencies which fully supported the PNP.
“If it was in the areas where a majority of Labourites were, we could say it’s victimisation. But the neglect was in the areas which fully support the PNP, and it only speaks to the incompetence of the government. And one thing we can say, is that they are not partial when it comes to neglect,” Golding told supporters while campaigning in the Kingston Central constituency on Sunday.
Golding walked for almost nine hours in the constituency, greeting hardcore supporters and shaking hands with well-wishers.
It was a punishing walk and some of the party’s officials and journalists instead opted to drive in motor vehicles. But the party leader, pink in the face from the all-day sunburn, said it was “death before dishonour”.
“Neglect. Neglect. Everywhere you turn that’s what you see, and that has been the overriding issue. That is what stands out mostly in front of us as we campaign,” Golding told the Observer.
But the Opposition Leader was not playing politics.
The stench of filth, running sewage and garbage-strewn gullies rose sharply in the afternoon’s heat. Despite the smell, babies, children, teenagers and adults were greeted by the party leader and other members of the JLP team.
The constituency, which has had PNP representation for the last 17 years, is characterised by dilapidated buildings, high unemployment, and garrison sections.
Golding asked voters to give their support to the party’s candidate Dr Charlton Collie, a heart surgeon.
It was clear, however, that there were persons in the constituency who were not in support of Dr Collie as the party’s representative, but JLP officials urged them to work with him.
“When we are marching down Duke Street to form the next government, I want Central Kingston to be there. When we take the Oath of Office, I want to see Charlton Collie,” Golding told his supporters.
