Two dead, five injured in four-vehicle crash
GREAT RIVER, Hanover -Two persons were killed yesterday and five others hospitalised following a four-vehicle crash along the main road in this rural town.
The dead were identified as Anthony Dellop, a lifeguard of John’s Hall in St James, and Hyacinth Renton-Spence, a 57-year-old administrative assistant of Hopewell, Hanover.
The police reported that shortly before 9:00 in the morning, the driver of a Honda Civic motor car overtook a Suzuki Vitara and then attempted to overtake a Toyota Corolla, which was heading towards Hopewell in Hanover. However, the Honda reportedly hit the Corolla, which spun out of control and collided head on with another Corolla, in which Renton-Spence was a passenger.
The Suzuki Vitara, the police said, also collided with the Toyota Corolla which the driver of the Honda attempted to overtake.
Dellop, who was a passenger in the Honda Civic, sustained multiple injuries and died on his way to hospital, while Spence died at hospital while undergoing treatment.
Yesterday, Member of Parliament for Eastern Hanover Barrington Grey appealed to motorists to proceed cautiously along the stretch of the road where the accident occurred, and suggested that an unbroken white line be painted along that section of the road.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of traffic Elan Powell said that while the unbroken line would give the police legitimacy to prosecute for the violation of improper overtaking, this action would not necessarily be a deterrent for improper overtaking.
“.Motorists have to use their discretion and know when or when not to overtake. They should not venture to overtake and put their own lives in danger,” said the traffic chief.
