Two more killed on the road
THE nine weekend road deaths were apparently not of concern to Elton Dawkins, who was said to be speeding from he left Kingston Monday night on the toll road that caused a nasty accident in which he and his front-seat passenger Devon Hewitt died on the Dyke Road, just across from the Portsmouth Housing Scheme in Portmore, St Catherine.
Hewitt, 41, and Dawkins, 27, both resided at Greater Portmore, also in St Catherine.
Residents said Dawkins was attempting to overtake another vehicle when he collided with a car which was heading towards Kingston, using the toll road.
A Rastafarian man, who was a back-seat passenger in the death car, as well as Delroy Williams, driver of the Toyota Corolla with which Dawkins’ Nissan Sunny collided, survived the deadly crash.
Williams, of Yallahs in St Thomas, and the Rastafarian man, who was not identified, were both admitted to the Spanish Town Hospital and later transferred to the Kingston Public Hospital.
“The police not answering 119; can’t get the ambulance on 110,” said a motorist who was among the scores gathered on the accident scene. Several other persons gathered at the accident site after 11:00 Monday night were busy on the phone trying to get the police and emergency service.
However, by the time two officers from the nearby Waterford Police Station arrived on the scene, the two injured were cut from the wrecked vehicles by helpful residents of Portsmouth and placed in a taxi to be taken to hospital.
Hewitt, who was thrown from the Nissan Sunny, and Dawkins, who was also cut from his vehicle by residents, were lying on the road when the police arrived. They were not breathing and appeared to be dead.
Two fire engines and a wrecker arrived on the accident scene about 10 minutes after the police, who had called for help. It, however, took almost 20 minutes more for the ambulance to arrive. It took the two men lying on the ground to hospital where doctors pronounced them dead.
Photographs show the two wrecked vehicles.
