Since the passage of the storm, the affected residents have seen an influx of political representatives in their communities, assessing the damage and offering support.

This is not surprising.

After all, with general elections expected to be held soon, politicians vying for power would undoubtedly want to impress the electorate by showing how caring and considerate they can be.

In Western Hanover, for example, Ian Hayles, the People’s National Party’s (PNP’s) representative for the area, has been touring the constituency since early Monday morning.

According to Hayles, his campaign organisation has already established a $250,000-fund from which money is being disbursed to provide emergency assistance to needy residents.

In Southern Trelawny, both Marisa Dalrymple Philibert, Jamaica Labour Party and the PNP’s Donette Brown Reid and members of their organisations are also in the field lending assistance.

The same can be said of almost all the other constituencies in the region.

But will Hurricane Dean improve their chances?

Only time will tell.
