Several individuals disappointed over omission from voters’ list
DISAPPOINTMENT and anger weighed heavily on the faces of several individuals whose names did not appear on the voters’ list despite cards from the candidates directing them to the polling divisions where they should vote.
None was more disappointed and angry than David Thompson.
He turned up at the Edith Dalton James High School, with courtship cards from the People’s National Party (PNP) and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) which told him to go to polling division 26B.
“When a goh dere, dem tell me seh mi name is not over dere, I must go to 26A. When me goh over dere, a find seh somebody inside dere have my name on a likkle bogus list, but dem tell me seh my name is not on de official list either. So weh mi must vote. Se mi ID (Elector ID) deh.,” Thompson bemoaned.
He said he was re-verified at his address, and assumed that everything would be fine on election day.
The dreadlocked Thompson, scratched his head and quarrelled and complained to anyone who would listen.
Not even the intervention by the election supervisor helped him to exercise his franchise.
Searches at several of the 12 polling stations located at the school came up empty as Thompson’s name could not be located.
Angry and disappointed, he stomped off the compound of the high school.
It was the same for another elector who transferred his vote from St Ann to St Andrew Western.
The elector, who did not want to be identified publicly, said, “they (EOJ officials) came to my new address, and verified me there. Now they are telling me that my name is not on the voters’ list.”
Upset and angry, he too grumbled and left the polling station in disgust.
Another older gentleman, with EOJ voters card in hand, said his wife did not receive her card from the office. As a result he did not know where she would have been voting.
He was advised to seek clarification from the constituency office.
It could not be ascertained if his wife’s problem was solved.
There were similar complaints across the constituencies of St Andrew East Central and West Central.
