Kingston robbers held in Clarendon
FOUR Kingston-based gunmen who police say pulled off a series of robberies in St Elizabeth, are now behind bars after they were intercepted by police in Clarendon Monday night.
According to Superintendent Dathan Henry of the May Pen Police Station, the men were intercepted shortly after 11:00 pm near the Cool Oasis Service Station on the Clarendon Park Main Road in the parish.
Police say that more than $90,000 in cash was recovered from the men.
An illegal firearm, three magazines and 30 rounds of 9mm ammunition were also seized during a search of the motor car in which the men were travelling.
“Based on information received from the police in St Elizabeth, we suspect that the robbers might have taken that route to get to Kingston. That roadway is nicely lit so we decided to set up our dragnets in that area,” said Henry.
“The vehicle that they were in was stopped and during a detailed search, the money as well as the weapon and the ammunition were found inside. It is believed that the money was stolen from fishermen on Monday evening,” Henry said, adding that the men have already been charged for the weapon but are to face an identification parade in relation to the robbery.
Meantime, Henry said the police is to meet with representatives of the National Commercial Bank (NCB) today as part of their investigation into the theft of an Automated Banking Machine in the parish.
The machine, which contained more than $4 million, was unhinged from its base at a gas station along the Toll Gate Main Road two weeks ago.
