Man held for murder of NWA employee
A man has been arrested in connection with last Thursday’s murder of National Works Agency employee Everton Mendez, the police confirmed yesterday.
Deputy Superintendent Michael Bailey, head of the Kingston East Police Division, said the man, whose identity was withheld – was arrested on Tuesday. He is to face an identification parade.
Police believe Mendez was killed over the distribution of work on a beautification project along the Michael Manley Boulevard in Kingston, the police said.
“We picked him (accused) up on Tuesday. As far as we understand, he was probably one of those persons from nearby communities who were looking for work on the site. We have not laid any charges against him as yet, he will have to face an identification parade before that,” Bailey told the Observer yesterday.
On Friday last, the police launched a manhunt in sections of the Rockfort community in East Kingston in search of the man who they said was the main suspect in the killing.
According to the cops, residents of several communities had expressed concerns that they were not allocated enough jobs on the beautification project.
A meeting was subsequently held with the residents to address their concerns, but a few days after Mendez was ambushed by a gunman who shot him several times while he was supervising the beautifi-cation work along Michael Manley Boulevard.
He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
