Boy dies after kite gets entangled with JPS wires
An 11-year-old boy was yesterday electrocuted while flying a kite at Mona Common in Kingston.
Police identified the dead boy as Ricardo Thomas, who they said was struck after the kite became entangled with Jamaica Public Service high-tension wires.
The incident occurred about 11:00 am while a contingent of police and soldiers maintained a presence in the community, following the murder of a male vendor on the nearby Mona Road.
“Jesus, I can’t believe is Ricky. Ricky get shock, Ricky get shock, Lord God Ricky is going to die,” cried a woman who was among a crowd of persons who rushed behind a speeding Jamaica Defence Force jeep transporting the youngster to the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Ricardo, who was unconscious, was hurried into the Accident and Emergency Unit by the soldiers, while persons peering through the windows prayed.
The boy’s father, who rushed onto the compound asking what the excitement was about, was a picture of grief and anger when a woman informed him about his son.
“My Ricky, my Ricky get shock. Me just tell the little boy to go around the road, how him end up with kite? Gunshot just fire in the place, what him a do with kite?” said the man, angrily.
About 30 minutes later the youngster had succumbed to his injuries, causing ear-splitting screams outside.
“Me can’t believe that the youth really go give away his life like this. From morning is just pure death in the community; man get shot and dead and now this. I can’t believe it,” said a male resident of Mona Common.
