Champ Walker returns after injury
THREE-TIME champion jockey Omar Walker returns to race-riding at Caymanas Park today with three rides on the 10-race.
Walker sat out a two-month period while recovering from a fractured collarbone, which he sustained from a fall in the vicinity of the 800-metre point on the track during a pile-up in a 1,600 metres race on October 31. The incident involved three horses.
Walker fell from his mount Samba Dancer in the eighth race of the day while making a challenging move along the rails and sustained the injury after two other horses went down in his path. The other horses involved were Digi N Jiggy, who fell first decking rider Doushane Gordon, and We Will See, who also went down with Vijay Ashley in the saddle.
Walker, who was last to fall, was the only one seriously injured and was subsequently sidelined for the rest of the racing season. At that time Walker was leading the jockeys’ standings with 97 winners some 15 more than Paul “Country” Francis, who failed by one to overhaul him.
Walker will have the leg up on Burning Cielo in the third race and Excellence and It Is Written for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta in the fourth and fifth races respectively. Walker, who is the stable rider for DaCosta, has already won aboard Burning Cielo for trainer Fitzgerald Richards and It Is Written. And with Excellence tipped to release her maiden tag by going all the way in the maiden condition race for native-bred three-year-olds, the champion jockey seems set return for the 2010 racing season with a three-timer.
Walker began riding professionally as an apprentice on July 29, 2006 and opened his winning account on Supernatural the same day for DaCosta. Since then the two have been inseparable, winning three consecutive riding and training titles, during which time the 27-year-old Walker has ridden 336 winners.
