Barbados hang on for draw against Leewards

Leeward Islands missed out on a chance to gain full points as Barbados held on at 158 for seven when the batsmen accepted the umpires’ offer of badlight with two and a half of the remaining 15 overs to be bowled before close of play yesterday.

Leewards settled for six points due to their first innings advantage over their opponents who got three points in the drawn game at Kensington Park.

Set a target of 224 early on the final day, Barbados failed to muster a credible run chase against yet another disciplined bowling performance from the Leewards.

Dale Richards was the first man to go when he mis-timed a flick shot to Kieran Powell at mid-on off the bowling of Lionel Baker. Fellow opener Jason Haynes then played a wild sweep against Anthony Martin and was given out leg before wicket less than 10 minutes before lunch.

Kirk Edwards and Ryan Hinds then guided their team to the break without any further disturbance.

After lunch Edwards innings ended when he was adjudged to have edged through to Devon Thomas off Martin.

Hinds and Martin shared in one of the key moments of the match when the legspinner riled up the Barbados captain with his aggressive, confrontational style. Hinds, obviously out to hit Martin out of the attack should have been out on nine when he charged the spinner but succeeded only in clipping a simple chest high chance to Powell forward of square leg who let the ball slip from his grasp.

Powell would have been relieved when Lionel Baker was returned to the attack and had Hinds caught behind by Thomas.

The elegant Kyle Hope went just before tea when he backed away to punch Omari Banks through the offside to be out bowled.

After the break topscorer Kevin Stoute went for one big hit too many and became Justin Athanaze’s first victim, being caught on the long on boundary.

Wicketkeeper batsman Patrick Browne was then bowled by Athanaze to give Leewards a glimmer of hope, but Shamarh Brooks and Nikolai Parris held on until they took the umpires offer of badlight at 4:38 pm with only two and half overs bowled out of the final 15 which were due.

Earlier in the day the Leeward Islands struggled to 216 all out after resuming from their overnight score of 186 for six and struggled to counter the Barbados attack, despite the decision by Hinds to persevere with the medium pace of Stoute after he had completed his unfinished over from the previous day when the rains came.
