Market Bag: Lower prices at ‘Curry’ offer Jamaicans slight reprieve
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Shoppers at the Coronation Market in downtown Kingston are breathing a sigh of relief this week amid lower food prices following weeks of surge in the cost of produce.
Scotch bonnet pepper, a ‘hot’ topic for weeks amid record prices, is selling for $4,000 a pound this week, down from $5,000.
Tomatoes are going for as low as $700 a pound compared to $800 last week.
Consumers will pay marginally less for Cabbage at $300 a pound, dropping from $350 a week earlier.
Meanwhile, escallion, yam and sweet potato prices have all held firm.
