Georges SC benefit from SDF grant
DIGICEL Premier League contenders St Georges SC are among eight entities set to benefit from projects funded by the state-run Sports Development Foundation (SDF) within the next six weeks.
General manager of the SDF, Ludlow Watts, told the Observer the projects — which range from lighting to the construction of multi-purpose courts — are costing approximately $41 million.
“We will be handing over four projects in January and four in February,” Watts said.
“The ones slated for handing over in January include the St John’s Primary School in Spanish Town, (which is) a multi-purpose court and wall to surroundings valued at some $4.6 million; the Bonnette All-Age School which is near to Guys Hill in St Catherine (and they are) getting a multi-purpose court worth some $2.1 million; Manchester High is benefitting from resurfacing work to one court and construction of another, totalling some $3.1 million; and Point Hill Community in St Catherine is getting a multi-purpose court worth $2.2 million for a total of $12.1 million,” said Watts.
The projects scheduled to be handed over in February include:
* Alston High School in Clarendon, which will get a Multi-Purpose court ($1.9m);
* Garvey Maceo which is getting a playfield and perimeter fencing ($7.8m);
* Spring Field Complex in Morant Bay which is getting a multi-purpose court ($1.9m);
* Hannah Town in Kingston is to receive a Community Centre consisting of changing rooms, Multi-Purpose courts ($11m)
* The St Georges’ playfield at Lynch Park in Buff Bay, Portland.
“We are in the process of erecting lighting to the Lynch Park Complex at a cost of $6.4 million. It’s just about completed now, and we will be going to test and then we will arrange to have the official handing over at their next home game in early February,” Watts said.
He further revealed that the Drax Hall Complex in St Ann and the Prison Oval in Spanish Town, St Catherine will also benefit from lights in months to come.
Watts, who also serves as treasurer of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association, said the SDF spent a total of $130 million on projects which include 26 multi-purpose courts and seven playing fields in 14 communities across the island.
