All set for Sunday’s ‘Hoops for Haiti’
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Two basketball games featuring the best players from the western region and an entertainment package including Digicel Rising Star winner Brown Sugar will be held at the Montego Bay Cricket Club on Sunday, starting at 3:00 pm, to help raise funds for earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
The event, which has been dubbed ‘Hoops for Haiti’, is the brainchild of newly WBA president Donald Reid, who told the Observer, “We’re asking that all participants donate their time and efforts so that every dollar raised will go towards this worthy cause.”
So far, she said, they had received “enthusiastic support from the clubs and the players”, while all officials, security personnel and referees are generously donating their time and the MoBay Cricket Club has donated the court time and lights.
The double-header will get going at 3:00 pm with the opening game featuring Division Two champions City Knight versus a team comprising the top female players, alongside some of the former players — billed ‘Young Turks’ vs The Ladies and the Legends.
The feature game will pit National Basketball League’s Western Conference Champions-Hoopers, coached by Douglas Reid, and the “Rest of the Best of the West” WBA All-Star Team, coached by Sheldon Pearson.
The WBA president, who is married to the Hoopers coach, has made “a small wager” with her husband that the ‘All-Star’ team will win and the money will go towards the proceeds.
Admission will be a minimum donation of $150 to the Red Cross, while refreshments will also be on sale, with profits going towards the cause as well.
