Two women in wharf arms bust on $5-m bail
TWO of the three people charged in connection with last month’s big firearm and ammunition find at Port Bustamante in Kingston were yesterday offered bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
The two accused — Paula Cayman and Karen Cole — were each offered $5 million bail with stringent reporting conditions. A bail application for the third accused, Courtney Thomas, was refused.
All three will be tried on March 15 on charges of conspiracy to and importing illegal guns and ammunition into the island.
The three were arrested and charged following the seizure of 12 high-powered weapons and 700 rounds of ammunition at Port Bustamante on January 11. The contraband was found hidden in an air compressor.
It is being alleged that Thomas, on the date in question, went to Port Bustamante to clear goods, which included the air compressor, after being paid $100,000 by Cayman to handle the transaction.
Cole was held in Thomas’ company at the port in possession of documents to clear the goods.
In making the bail application for Cayman, attorney Chris Tavares-Finson, who appears with his father Tom Tavares-Finson, told the court that there was no document in the possession of the prosecution linking his client to the gun and ammunition find.
Cole is being represented by Kathryn Phipps, while attorney Franklin Halliburton appears for Thomas.
