Bulli grabs six in six balls for big win
Former national youth player Dennis Bulli etched his name into the annals of cricket when he captured six wickets in six balls against Portland to highlight second-round action in the Senior Cup, which ended on Sunday.
Bulli’s spell-bound performance was not the first in the history of the game, but more importantly his achievement steered Kensington to a massive 10-wicket victory over the Portlanders at Kensington Oval.
There were outright victories for Hanover and St Mary, the former beating Police by 35 runs at Elgin Town to take sole leadership in Group B, while the latter recorded their first win of the season, an away nine-wicket triumph over St James at Jarrett Park.
However, it was St Thomas who registered the biggest victory of the round. An emphatic innings and 89 runs win over minnows Boys’ Town at Collie Smith ensured that the lads from eastern Jamaica continue to lead Group A ahead of Kensington with both sides on maximum 12 points.
Despite claiming first-innings honours, Lucas were held to a draw by Kingston and St Andrew at Maxfield Park, while at Jamalco, hosts Clarendon failed to get full points from their encounter against GC Foster College.
The Portlanders were expected to put up a strong fight in their travels to Kensington, but by midway on Saturday’s opening day Bulli had them in a tailspin.
The left-arm orthodox spinner, who was introduced early into the attack, wasted little time getting his co-ordinates right, as he captured seven for 16 to dismiss the visitors for 105.
Maurice Kepple then carried his bat with an unbeaten even hundred as the hosts replied with 239 for eight declared.
Batting a second time, Portland posted 197 all out with Akeem Dewar (4-46) and Jermaine Gordon (3-38) doing most damage, while Bulli took 1-42.
Set a victory target of 63, Kensington raced to 64 without loss with Horace Miller stroking an attacking undefeated 50, and Ranville Brown not out on eight.
Damion Distin (4-35) bagged a hat-trick, but Police (116 & 105) came out on the losing end in a low-scoring game in which McKoy Ewart, in the second innings, grabbed eight for 19 to give victory to Hanover (167 & 99).
The combined efforts of Marlon Byfield (5-30) and Takeem Lowe handed St Marry (146 & 70-1) a crushing nine-wicket win over St James (93 & 125).
Christie Jones played a lead role for St Thomas’ (225) huge win over Boys’ Town (68 & 98), grabbing 5-21 in the second innings for match figures of eight 40, after making 33.
An improved second innings performance by Kingston and St Andrew (161 & 261) saw them getting a share of the points against Lucas (269).
Marlon Guy (5-44) was the chief destroyer for Lucas against the city boys, who fought back well with Shane Harris (94) missing out on a century, as Ransford Merchant snared six for 61.
A half-century knock of 54 from Marcel Parchment guided Clarendon (241 & 51-1) to first innings honours against the visiting GC Foster College (206 & 152). But time ran out for the hosts after Sherwin Dixon’s second innings burst of 7-47 set them a modest victory target of 118.
