School Council Group intensifies Rights, Respect and Responsibilty
The National Secondary Students’ Council (NSSC) continued on their trek across the island last week, as they sought to inform students of their rights and responsibilities as part of the recently launched ‘RRR’ Campaign.
Haile Selassie High School hosted the NSSC on Monday, March 22, 2010 as the team of presenters from the NSSC, National Centre for Youth Development and the National Youth Parliament interacted with students throughout the day, delivering presentations on topical youth issues, and encouraging the students to ‘raise the standards’.
Chanise Henry, NSSC Regional Vice-President explained that the Campaign is a direct effort to promote respect and responsibility on the part of students, while ensuring that the rights of students are upheld.
Henry, a student at St George’s College, noted, “We need to ensure that students are aware of their rights and take every effort to safeguard them. However, each student must be mindful of the responsibilities that they have to themselves, their family, their school and to our country, and approach these with respect that should be accorded to each and every individual.”
The RRR Campaign also visited the St Mary Technical High School on Friday, March 26th, delivering a similar message of rights, respect and responsibility to the welcoming school population.
After hosting interactive sessions in each classroom, the NSSC team then delivering an edutainment package as part of the school’s “Spanish Day” concert.
NSSC President Andre Stephens noted “the RRR Campaign is a national initiative and as such the team will be going to other schools in an effort to promote the objectives and raise the standards that students apply. As students, it is full time that we make all efforts to safeguard our future and promote positive youth development.”
The NSSC is the umbrella organisation for students’ councils across Jamaica, with the mandate to advocate for students’ rights while promoting student responsibility.
