Campbell claims breastroke triple at Carifta
KEVAUGHN Campbell clinched the breastroke triple, and along with Dominic Walter and Ivana Chang, gave Jamaica three more medals at press time on the fourth and final night at the 25th Carifta Swimming Championships at the National Stadium Pool.
Campbell, who led all the way, posted 1:14.74 to tie up the Boys 11-12 100m breastroke gold, beating Grenada’s Corey Ollivierre, 1:19.56, and Bahamian Dionisio, 1:19.60.
The 12-year-old of Wolmer’s Boys’ School also claimed the 200m breastroke and 50 breastroke crowns.
Walter, meanwhile, swam strategically to gift Jamaica their fifth silver after his performance in the Boys 15-17 400m freestyle.
Walter clocked 4:14.76, as Martinique’s Matthias Bellance triumphed in 4:12.22, with Netherland Antilles’ Derrick Bakhuis finishing third in 4:15.04.
Walter settled in the fourth and fifth place in the first half of the race as he battled with Bakhuis of the Netherland Antilles and Alexander Lavater of Martinique.
Bellance decided the race for himself after 150 metres, and by 300m, Walter ground out the water to position himself for second and third. On the final stretch he inched ahead of Bakhuis to take the silver medal.
In the Girls 11-12 50m freestyle, Chang held on for third in a time of 29.27 seconds, as Barbadian Inayah Sherry won in 28.08 seconds, with Trinidadian Tyla Martin second in 28.66 seconds.
At press time, Jamaica had 20 medals — seven gold, five silver, and eight bronze — and were battling for fifth place.
