Hyatt, Russell shine… Pilot Ja past Ireland in one-dayer
DISCOVERY BAY, St Ann — Danza Hyatt hit a century (102) and Andre Russell grabbed five wickets as Jamaica beat Ireland by four wickets in the second game of the Supreme Ventures Sports Betting Cricket Festival at Port Rhoades Sports Club here yesterday.
Jamaica reached 230 for four off 47.2 overs replying to Ireland’s 227 all out in what coach Junior Bennett described as “a satisfactory run chase”, adding that at a team meeting the previous night they had decided to take a “calculated approach to the batting as we had not done well in this form of the cricket over the past few years”.
Hyatt’s century included 13 fours and a six and came off 111 balls in 164 minutes, while David Bernard contributed 52 not out with three boundaries.
When asked about the performance of Hyatt and Russell yesterday, Bennett said: “You can’t ask for more; one took five wickets and the other made a hundred.”
He was particularly happy with Russell who, in addition to his five-wicket haul, also took a brilliant catch to dismiss Alex Cusak off the bowling of Tamar Lambert, describing the 21-year-old as “a genuine all-round prospect that will serve Jamaica and the West Indies well”.
Russell, who made an unbeaten century in the drawn three-day match between the teams last weekend, bagged five for 40 off 9.3 overs in two controlled spells.
Set 228 to win, Jamaica started slowly and trailed the Irish run rate early on as they got to 50 after 11.3 overs, compared to the Irish’s 9.5 overs, and the 100 in 22.2 overs, while the Irishmen reached that milestone in 18.3 overs.
Jamaica were still behind when they got to 150 in 33.1 overs, but had wickets intact, despite losing Brenton Parchment for 10, debutant Kemar Marshall for 15 and captain Lambert for 18.
With six overs to go, Jamaica needed 25 runs, but lusty hitting from Baugh — who smashed four fours in his 24 — and Bernard ensured their team reached the target with just under three overs to spare.
Earlier, after losing the toss and being sent in under sunny but windy conditions, Ireland lost two quick wickets for 29 runs, Paul Stirling (0) and Andre Botha (21) both becoming victims of Russell, who took two wickets for 11 runs off four overs in his first spell.
However, two half-century partnerships restored the innings for the visitors as Gary Wilson, who topscored with 56, and captain William Porterfield, 43, put on 71 for the third wicket.
Wilson hit four fours in his stay at the crease, while Porterfield, who was dropped by Santokie in the same over in which the left-arm medium-pacer clean-bowled him, hit two sixes and two fours.
Wilson and Obrien then put on 67 runs for the fourth wicket to take the score to 167, but then lost three wickets for 24 runs as Russell, along with Lambert and Bevon Brown, who took two wickets each, mopped up the tail.
Extras continued significantly to the Irish score, totalling 40, including 22 wides.
