Swede Nordqvist bags Mojo6 golf tournament
ROSE HALL, St James — Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist became the first winner of the Mojo6 LPGA Speedway golf tournament yesterday after beating the American Amanda Blumenherst 1up in the final of the match play tournament at the Cinnamon Hills golf course.
The six-foot tall blonde, who is on her second year on the LPGA tour and who was ranked fourth, produced a spectacular birdie on the par four second hole in the final which proved to be the winner.
After hitting her tee shot into the sand trap to the right of the elevated green, she then chipped the ball directly into the hole after two bounces.
Nordqvist, who told reporters after the final she had “goose bumps” during the final hole, collected US$350,000 for her efforts over the last two days, while Blumenherst won US$120,000.
In a marathon third-place play-off, American Cristie Kerr, who looked a likely a winner midway the day’s proceedings, beat Na Yeon Choi of Korea 1up after seven play-off holes, the last four of which were played in a heavy drizzle.
In the semi-finals, Nordqvist beat Kerr 1up in a play-off, while Blumenherst came from behind to tie-up her match against Choi on the fifth hole to force a play-off which she won.
Earlier in the day in the quarterfinals, Blumenherst beat Brittany Lang; Choi beat Suzann Pettersen; Nordqvist eliminated the popular Christina Kim, while Kerr beat Beatriz Recari.
