Cocktails with… Karen Kranenberg
Polo & More editor Karen Kranenberg travels the globe and manages to stay effortlessly fab while doing so. She’s sipping stylishly at her new favourite spot in Kingston — Bin 26 at Devon House — and sharing with us her brand of crazy-sexy-cool.
What are you sipping?
Veuve Clicquot, darling.
So you’re in Kingston for the next two weeks. How will you be spending your time?
Working on the Scotia Private Client Group Jamaica Open by day and coming to Bin 26 by night.
Socialite or homebody?
Oh, socialite extraordinaire.
Flats or stilettos?
Stilettos, definitely.
What’s your must-have accessory?
The BlackBerry and, after that, a fabulous pair of Christian Louboutin shoes.
What’s your style?
It ranges from elegant to over-the-top sexy.
What’s in your handbag?
The Barbados edition of Polo & More, iPod, my two BlackBerrys, my make-up bag, Perfekt foundation, My Prada wallet and sandals, my hard drive, my Tam Dao perfume by Diptyque.
Who does your hair?
Well, that depends on where I am. In London I go to Trevor Sorbie in Covent Garden; in New York I go to Frédéric Fekkai and when I’m in Barbados I go to the one-and-only Rhonda B, who will always open for me on a Sunday. I haven’t yet found anyone in Kingston.
Who does your nails?
Depends on where I am, again.
Who or what inspires you?
I’m an exceedingly adventurous person… my next adventure is climbing Cho Oyu in Tibet this August. My parents are quite admirable, too… they’ve managed to raise me (laughs).
When you’re not seeing the world, where’s the one place to find you?
You have to call and find where I am on any given day…take your pick.
What’s your idea of the perfect date?
Lots of champagne, a good-looking, generous man who entertains me… and that date can be anywhere in the world, the more exotic the better.
What’s your idea of the perfect man?
Someone who is considerate, loves fast cars and fast women like me and not allergic to champagne or any kind of alcohol (laughs) and must have interest in polo, mountain climbing, diving and all the other things I do… couch potatoes need not apply!
What’s on your iPod?
A variety of things… The Fray, Rihanna, Plumb, John Mayer, Elton John, Paul Van Dyk, Madonna and Lady GaGa, to name a few.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
My mother always said: “To thine own self be true” and my friends would say: “It’s better to burn out than to fade away.”
And 10 years from now?
I could be anywhere!
