Dexter Pottinger brings Cuban 3-D glamour to Styleweek
MODEL-turned-designer Dexter Pottinger plans to give a ‘3D’ spin on the vintage glamour of our closest neighbours, Cuba, for his collections at Styleweek Jamaica, May 27-30.
Pottinger plans to showcase his versatility by exhibiting at the International Men’s Collections on May 28, the International Mecca Of Style on May 29, and at Fashionblock on May 30.
Pottinger, who recently visited Cuba, says he was fascinated by the street fashion culture, which he described as “Eurocentric styled with a Caribbean flavour”.
“I was quite impressed with the way the young Cubans dress, but the architecture is what I fell in love with; quaint yet powerful,” said Pottinger.
Pottinger started his fashion career as a model with Saint International. After his development programme he was given multiple options for top London and South Africa modelling agencies but opted to get experience in styling for editorials and music videos. Dexter was introduced by Saint CEO Deiwght Peters to top New York stylist Tyron Mayes, who took Pottinger under his wings.
His entry into the fashion spotlight was characterised by early success as he won the inaugural Appleton-sponsored Avant Garde designer of The Year contest in 2005.
In 2006, Pottinger accepted an invitation from Saint to show his designs at Barbados Fashionweek and received a standing ovation from visiting international fashion press.
His talent makes him a triple threat across the entertainment industry. He is the stylist of choice among Jamaica’s top female artistes such as Ce’cile, Tami Chynn, D’Angel, Tiffa and others.
Pottinger now shares time behind the cameras as a video director and has credits on Ce’cile’s Ride Or Die and Tiffa’s Spell it Out.
“Dexter is consistently original and takes his work seriously and maintains a positive energy. We are happy that he has also been invited to several international fashion weeks in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America next year,” Peters revealed to Splash.
Styleweek Jamaica is endorsed by the Jamaica Tourist Board.
