WBA Div 1 return round starts

MONTEGO BAY, St James — Newly-crowned mid-season champions Central Flames of Lucea, Hanover will kick off the return round of the Western Basketball Association’s Division One competition on Sunday when they take on Hopewell Vipers at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.

Central Flames won their second consecutive mid-season final on Sunday, beating Sav Hawks 65-50 at the Cricket Club thanks to a combined 42 points from the Dorman brothers Craig and Kurt.

On Sunday they will be seeking to beat Vipers for the second time this season after winning the first round game 62-57 in a close finish.

The return round will get underway on Saturday when Montego Bay Cricket Club Knights will seek a second win over Granville Wolfpack in a game starting at 5:30pm followed by Sav Hawks against Trelawny Tornadoes at 7:00pm.

Hawks had opened their season with a big 66-42 win in the first round.

In Sunday’s game, Flames who had beaten Hopewell Vipers in the all-Hanover mid-season final last season, dominated the game with the league’s top scorer Craig Dorman getting a game high 27 points and his brother Kurt pulling down 17 rebounds along with 15 points.

Four teams had finished the first round tied on 10 points with Hawks and Flames having the best goal difference, which is used as the first tiebreaker.

Flames got off to a good start on Sunday and were up by nine points 16-7 after the first quarter and despite a rally by Hawks in the second, they still trailed 28-24 at half time.

Both teams upped their tempo in the second half but Hawks failed to match Flames who outscored them 37-26 over the third and fourth quarters.

In addition to his 27 points, Craig Dorman also had 10 rebounds, three assists and five steals while Alrick Haughton also contributed with nine points and seven rebounds.

Kenneth Blackwood led Hawks with 12 points, Richard Chambers and Troy Reid scored nine points each while George Beckford scored seven.
