Brown targets 400m in comeback bid
BOGUE, St James — Former Commonwealth Games 200-metres gold medallist Omar Brown is eyeing a comeback from a long injury lay-off and will contest the 200-400 double next season.
Brown, a former Albert Town High and University of Arkansas athlete, says he is looking forward to adding the quarter-mile to his repertoire after specialising in the 200 for most of his career.
The 28-year-old Brown, who won the 200 at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Australia, was in Montego Bay on Wednesday, accompanying his wife — Olympic and World Championship gold medallist Veronica Campbell Brown, who spoke at the 2010 Dignity Day celebrations held at Herbert Morrison Technical.
Brown told the Observer that his injured ankle which needed surgery “was responding nicely and I’m nearly at the end of the recovery period”.
The big Jamaican had announced some times ago that he was switching to the longer distance, but his injury and subsequent operation had limited his appearances on the track.
Brown, who also attended Manchester High and represented Jamaica at the 2000 Olympic Games while still a schoolboy, has a personal best of 46.00 seconds in the 400 set in April 2005, and a best of 20.33 seconds set in the 200, set in may 2006.
