The Jamaican vacation for Chilean miners
Dear Editor,
I wish to congratulate Gordon “Butch’ Stewart and the Sandals Hotel Group now led by Mr Adam Stewart for their recent initiative in offering to those rescued Chilean miners and their families an
all-expense paid vacation in Jamaica.
The Minister of Tourism, the Jamaica Tourist Board, the airlines and all the others who have assisted to make this possible are also to be congratulated.
There are cynics who are saying that Sandals is making this initiative to gain publicity. My response to this is:
(1) Sandals and Beaches are the world’s most renowned all-inclusive resorts. They need no more publicity.
(2) The publicity gained, if any, will be for the benefit of Jamaica and the ailing tourist industry.
(3) Jamaica could not at this time afford this initiative without the help of entrepreneurs like the Sandals group; neither could the Tourist Board pay for any advertisement which may flow from this initiative.
(4) Why has no other group of so-called entrepreneurs made a similar initiative? There is an old saying that “Empty barrels make the most noise.”
