RECENTLY, Digicel continued on their series of community family fun days. This time, the team of over 30 staff members travelled to the western parish of Trelawny to celebrate with the residents of Albert Town. The Albert Town Citizens’ Association also declared Saturday, October 16, as Albert Town Day.

Speaking with TEENage, Gladys Codner, president of the citizens’ association, said Albert Town Day was in recognition of the community placing first in the parish of Trelawny and third at the national level in the Digicel BEST Communities Competition. Codner went on to boast of her community’s self-reliance and culture, and added that the aim was to make Albert Town the paradise of Jamaica.

The day got off to a grand start as the Digicel crew, armed with prizes and surprises, greeted the large crowd that had already gathered to enjoy the day with them. The domino competition grabbed most of the attention initially until the Digicel dancers took the stage. Albert Town resident, Jermaine Gray, accompanied Digicel’s resident dancer ‘Taz’ on stage and he was rewarded with Digicel goodies for his efforts. This encouraged other residents to show off their dance moves and soon the stage was bombarded with persons singing, dancing, reciting poems, or doing just about anything to get their hands on the many prizes Digicel had to give away.

In the meantime, other residents were busy having fun at the activities area which included face painting, art and craft, and board and ring games. The residents of the yam parish, were all smiles as the company continued to give away prizes throughout the day. The phone trade-in section gave non-Digicel customers a chance to switch to the network, an opportunity which hundreds took advantage of.

The arrival of the Digicel Rising Stars 2010 winner, Dalton Harris, not only brought more residents but also heavy rain. The residents of Albert Town, however, were not about to let the rain be a deterrent on their day as they quickly crowded the autograph signing session. The rain continued to threaten to bring the day to an abrupt end, but when host of the day Miss Kitty graced the stage, it was quite obvious that a little rainfall could not hinder the residents of Albert Town from having fun.

Gladys Codner was called on stage to make the official announcement that October 16 was now Albert Town Day. The president of the citizens’ association then took the time out to present to the community the plaque they had won in the BEST Community Competition and thanked everyone for the role they played in making Albert Town one of the best communities in Jamaica.

With the rain coming to a halt, it was time for the live performances. First up were the Albert Town drummers followed by a long list of talented residents of the community. The first major performance of the night came from the soothing Dalton Harris, who captivated the crowd with his melodic singing of Air Supply’s The One That You Love and ending with his own rendition of Craig David’s Walking Away. The host of the night kept the town alive as she cautioned both the men and women in the audience about living a healthy life in a most comical way.

Dancehall artiste Bugle was the final act of the night and he did not disappoint.

Digicel went into Albert Town with the aim of connecting with customers and their families, but they achieved much more, they made the inaugural Albert Town Day one never to forget.
