JAMAICA will go all out to shackle Cuba in game two of their three-match series at 4:00 pm today at Mona, in order to keep alive their chances to book the eighth and final spot for next year’s Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Lady Hummingbirds, as the Jamaicans are called, were outplayed in their opening game on Thursday going down 0-3 and will have to at be at their shooting best this afternoon to keep the clinical Cubans in check.

Cuba, guided by coach Hilario Yera Diaz, are aware that Jamaica will be throwing everything at them and his girls will not be letting their guard down.

He is hoping that the Hummingbirds would not pull off the feat they did at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba, when Jamaica won 2-0 on August 14 of that year.

Jamaica boast an ABN AMRO Women’s World Ranking of 39, with Cuba at 50 in the latest update published on September 14.

Cuba would have had a higher world ranking if they participated in more international competitions such as this year’s Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. The Spanish-speaking Caribbean neighbours won the CAC Games in 2006 and in 1998. They did not participate in the 2002 games in Puerto Rico when Jamaica were runners-up to champions Trinidad & Tobago.

Goalkeeper Lorie-Ann McIntosh, Jamaica’s most experienced player, was not at her best on Thursday, and it’s hoped she will better today.

Captain Dadreann Clarke will as usual lead from the front, while Shareeka Elliott, Shackera Williams and Chantal Russell have to try and run for more than 80 per cent of each half to keep the ball moving and in possession of the home team as much as possible.

Hosts Mexico, South Americans Argentina and Chile, CAC Games’ Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados, and Pan American Cup top teams USA and Canada have already qualified for next year’s PanAm Games.
