Bridgmohan launches Fall campaign with double
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CMC) — Jamaican jockey Shaun Bridgmohan started the 121st Fall Meet at Churchill Downs in style when he landed two winners on the opening day on Sunday.
The 31-year-old scored in the US$48,000 race six with Cool City before returning to win with Cheyann Belief in the $50,000 race nine, to complete a successful outing at the southern United States racetrack.
He was forced to share the spotlight, however, with American reinsman Robby Albarado who won three times on the day’s 11-race card.
Bridgmohan kicked off his success going six furlongs as he virtually made all the running with the two-year-old bay colt City Cool, to win by a whopping 8 1/2 lengths.
He duelled with Bruce Springsteed through the first quarter before emerging with a two-length lead at the half-mile mark.
Entering the stretch, Bridgmohan got the 3-1 bet clear and he raced to the finish unchallenged to finish in one minute, 11.51 seconds.
He returned to the winners’ enclosure in contrasting style, piloting the 2-1 bet Cheyann Belief to a narrow victory over the two-year-olds, going 6 1/2 furlongs.
Aboard the brown colt, Bridgmohan stalked the pace as Tale of Lucknfame led, but had drawn even as the race left the turn.
The two then locked horns in the stretch but Bridgmohan held the colt steady to reach home by half length.
