Carimac students get creative in promoting road safety
The public relations (PR) class of 2011 at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) has partnered with major private and public sector organisations to promote safe driving habits and reduce road accidents among students at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona Campus.
The highlight of this initiative will the staging of an expo entitled, Wreckage: Driving for ‘U’ and WI on November 18, 2010 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Students’ Union, UWI, Mona.
Joining the slew of partners in this inaugural event, are the Jamaica Road Safety Unit of the Ministry of Transport and Works, Supreme Ventures, Scotia Jamaica Life Insurance Limited and Grennell’s Driving School.
Director of Carimac, Dr Canute James, says he is pleased that the final year PR students have decided to take such a creative approach on an issue of national concern that also has an impact on UWI students.
“This exposition and its theme are of immediate yet constant relevance to the health, safety and well-being of all students. The UWI student community has suffered the painful loss of several members in road accidents in recent years, and it is clear that an effort such as this to sensitise the community to this problem will lift the awareness of students, and hopefully, reduce the incidence of these painful events.”
The EXPO will feature a number of performances by Jamaica’s top recording artistes who have endorsed the ‘Driving for U and WI’ message.
The Expo will also serve as a springboard for the establishment of ‘The Sober Zone’, a special non-alcoholic section of the University’s weekly party Integration Thursdays.
