COMFY WINS
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former champions Rusea’s High and Glenmuir, as well as Marcus Garvey Technical and Lennon, all scored big wins as the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition got underway yesterday.
Brian Brown scored twice as Rusea’s cruised past Inter-zone debutants Spot Valley 4-0 at Jarrett Park in a Group Two game.
Spot Valley finished the game with 10 players after referee sent off Jamaal Haye in the 67th minute, by which time the game was already decided.
Brown, who took the scoring lead in the competition with Glenmuir’s Ramon Whittaker, scored in the 14th and 56th, while Anthony Walker in the 33rd and Ramon Foster in the 39th got the other goals.
Walker’s goal came from a speculative effort as he swung the ball in from the right side and it sailed high over the defence and into the goal behind goalkeeper Lamar Taylor, who had left his line.
Whittaker scored a double while Sayco Gordon and Noel Johnson got one each as Glenmuir rolled to a 4-0 win over St Thomas Technical in the first game of a double-header at York Oval to take control of Group Five.
Marcus Garvey Technical continued their impressive run, beating St Mary High 3-0 at Drax Hall, with goals coming from Latroy Laing, Terrence Johnson and Carlos Campbell in their Group One game.
In the other Group One game, St James High’s embattled duo of Allan Ottey and Ricardo Morris got the goals as they scored their first win over Frome Technical at Frome, 2-1.
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) had suggested on Tuesday that both players, members of the National Under-20 outfit, should be left out of all games after turning down on invitation to train with the national senior team this week.
Lennon High were also impressive winners, blanking Mannings School 3-0 at Jamalco. Odaine Brown, Alex Bennett and National Under-20 representative Ewan Grandison were the scorers for Lennon, who took the lead in Group Three after the game between Manchester and Munro College was rained out.
Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) were held 0-0 by Spalding in the first game of a double-header at Brook’s Park.
Titchfield High and Garvey Maceo are joint leaders in Group Six after scoring 1-0 wins. Titchfield beat Old Harbour at Carder Park, while Garvey Maceo got the better of beaten Ben Francis KO finalists Paul Bogle at York Oval.
Kevon Richards got the only goal of the game as Clarendon College started with a 1-0 win over Grange Hill at Jamalco in Group Four.
The other two games ended in draws, St Mary Technical and Browns Town were goalless, while Buff Bay and Charlemont shared two goals in a 1-1 draw.
