Flick of the Week

For Colored Girls

For Colored Girls weaves together the stories of nine different women — Joanna, Tangie, Crystal, Gilda, Kelly, Juanita, Yasmine, Nyla and Alice — as they move into and out of one another’s existences; some are well known to one another, others are as yet strangers. Crises, heartbreaks and crimes will ultimately bring these nine women fully into the same orbit where they will find commonality and understanding. Each will speak her truth as never before. And each will know that she is complete as a human being, glorious and divine in all her colors.

Now Showing

Saw 3D

The Saw series continues with this seventh entry, spearheaded by returning Saw VI director Kevin Greutert. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton also are back to pen the script, which details the exploits of serial killer Jigsaw’s surviving victims, who seek counseling from a self-help mentor (Sean Patrick Flanery) whose past as a previous victim figures directly into each one’s fate. Cary Elwes returns to the franchise for the first time since his character survived Jigsaw’s first cinematic outing in 2004.

127 Hours

Filmmaker Danny Boyle adapts the true-life story of Aron Ralston with this Fox Searchlight production detailing the hiker’s harrowing quest for survival after losing an arm to a fallen rock and the grueling five-day ordeal that finally ended with his rescue. James Franco steps into the role of the unfortunate climber.

Red

A group of former government assassins fights back against the CIA after they’re targeted for knowing too much in this adaptation of Warren Ellis’ acclaimed DC Comics graphic novels. Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) used to be a hired gun for the CIA. Along with Joe (Morgan Freeman), Marvin (John Malkovich), and Victoria (Helen Mirren), Frank’s specialty was carrying out contracts that the government didn’t want the public to know about. These days, Frank and his old gang are all retired, but the powers that be are still concerned that they know too much, and dispatch a team of top assassins to ensure their silence. Now, Frank and his former team members realize that their only hope for survival is to break into CIA headquarters and expose the truth. But once they’re in, the group uncovers evidence of a massive cover-up that promises to rock the very foundation of our government. Karl Urban, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, and Ernest Borgnine co-star.

Flipped

A young schoolboy realizes that the same girl he struggled to avoid may actually be his one true love in this coming-of-age romantic comedy from director Rob Reiner. Adapted from the book by Wendelin Van Draanen, Flipped tells the story of mischievous schoolboy Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) and his neighbor Juli (Madeline Carroll), who’s had a crush on her girl-phobic classmate since second grade. Over the course of six years, Juli pines for Bryce as he does everything in his power to put her off. Later, as the pair enters junior high, Bryce discovers girls and the tide starts to shift. But will Juli still be interested after all that Bryce has done to keep her at arm’s length? Rebecca De Mornay, Aidan Quinn, Anthony Edwards, and Penelope Ann Miller co-star.
