Security guard gets nine months for stabbing boy
A security guard was slapped with a nine-month prison sentence for the stabbing of a student in September on the compound of a prominent all-girl school where he was employed.
The sentence was imposed on 43-year-old Rainford Campbell after he pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful wounding in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
But before the sentence was imposed, Campbell was scolded by Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey for his action, which resulted in the 16-year-old victim receiving injuries to the abdomen and on the hand.
Asked by Pusey why he should not be imprisoned for his deed, Robinson said he had six children to support.
“You have six children and you do that to another man’s child?” said an unimpressed Pusey. “I am sorry, but you have to do nine months in prison.”
The incident occurred on September 15 at the school where the 16-year-old male student attended Saturday classes. The complainant said in court documents that he was attacked by Campbell after he (the student) and some friends saw him with a bag, which he and his friends found on the compound and was about to take to a teacher.
The complainant said that Campbell started to curse expletives and grabbed him and shoved him against the wall. He said Campbell took the bag and pulled out a knife and started attacking him when he tried escaping.
Tuesday, the complainant’s mother told the court that Campbell cut off her son’s pants and that the knife almost caught his penis.
However, Campbell said in his defence that he was trying to stop the complainant and his friends from stealing his bag. He said he did not know how the boy got cut, but that his report of the incident was exaggerated.
