Front Pew with Reverend Trevor Dawkins

Name: Trevor Dawkins

Church: Trinity Moravian

Location: 29-37 Montgomery Avenue, Richmond Park, Kingston.

Membership: 220 members

Has been a pastor for: 32 years

Marital status: Married to Verona, with three children

Four things about you that people would be surprised to know:

1. I listen to Vybz Kartel and Buju Banton

“I am an ardent lover of music, and some of the songs that I know people would never know that I know or listen to them like Vybz Kartel, and Buju who is somewhat semi-religious if you listen to him carefully. So when youngsters come with some issues, I am very much aware of the pressure that they have because of the impact that these sub-cultural activities bring to them.”

2. I will never forget snitching on my cousin

“As a child, I remember my cousin and I went to the shop to buy bread, and it was my cousin’s idea that we take two slices out and put it (the bread) back together as it would still be a whole bread. We had the first two slices, but because of the distance, we had two more slices and the bread became noticeably short. By the time we got home, the first thing my mother noticed was that the bread was very short and she said she didn’t want that bread, we had to take it back to the shop. But I knew that we couldn’t take it back to the shop, so I just started to bawl because I knew what was coming and I just had to squeal on my cousin.”

3. I have terrible memory

“I think it is a matter of information overload, but some things get crowded out and you deal with the immediate and the emerging, and some other things get pushed aside. So I am very, very happy to have (my secretary) because she calls me and reminds me of things an hour before.”

4. I hide my frustration well

“Frustration is something that you come across, and quite often if I don’t tell anybody, they don’t know, and very often I don’t tell anybody. Sometimes you become very frustrated with issues that seem to be very overwhelming, they might be organisational issues or just social issues. Sometimes I become very frustrated with the process.”
